From time to time I will highlight some companies who are executing SMMP successfully. This week, Business Travel News gives us a great example of a financial services company being a good steward of its meetings expenditures and saving money! Deutsche Bank, which spends about $150 million per year on meetings around the world, is now expanding its strategic meetings management program (SMMP) to its operations in Asia.
The Deutsche Bank Smart Meetings Program was designed and launched in the U.S. and Europe in 2007 by Debbie Dayton, global head of travel-related services. In addition, Shawn Radek, the project lead, has been invaluable managing the day-to-day tasks of getting the program up and running. The program has all the sophisticated meetings management best practices, for example:
- centralized meeting planning and procurement
- automated budgeting, requests for proposals (RFPs), reservations, back-end reporting and reconciliation
StarCite has been very fortunate to help Deutsche Bank transform its meetings. They're using our meetings management platform, including our budget analyzer tool, which enables the bank to load its own data on hotels, airfares, food and beverage and other spend to project the total cost of an event. What's impressive is that the bank analyzes this information before any money is spent -- to determine whether a proposed meeting gets approved or where it could be hosted cheaper.
Kudos to the Deutsche Bank Travel & Meetings team! In these days of public criticism of business meetings, I hope the mainstream media features more positive stories like Deutsche Bank’s SMMP. Maybe we'll see more public confidence that meetings make good business sense!
